Appeal for volunteers to help run our club next season

Appeal for volunteers to help run our club next season

Our hockey club is run by volunteers and we (your committee) would  like to ask everyone to consider making time to help out next season.

Many of you already help the club and we are very grateful to all of you - committee members, captains, umpires, coaches, junior team managers etc.

Our club is in a good place but needs new people and new ideas to improve and grow, particularly as some individuals are stepping down from key roles at the  AGM on 14th June. (See below of the list of roles).

There are lots of reasons to get involved

  • Maybe you think the club can do better and you’d like to help introduce changes
  • Maybe you’d like to "pay it forwards” - give something back to today’s club for all the people who mentored and supported you in your hockey "career” to date
  • Maybe you’d like to “do your bit” to serve the local community - for adults or for juniors.
  • Maybe you have some relevant skills or would like to learn some new ones.

Volunteering myths - don’t be put off!

  1. I need to be a playing member of the club - UNTRUE. Anyone - including parents of junior members and non-members - can volunteer to help!
  2. I need to be a hockey player and know all the rules - UNTRUE. Most roles don’t need any hockey knowledge and free training is available where needed.
  3. I need to have particular skills/qualifications/experience - UNTRUE. Just bring a bit of energy and a fresh perspective - there are very few roles that require special skills.
  4. I will need to commit loads of time - UNTRUE. Some roles need a couple of hours a week, but many require less. Many responsibilities can be shared with others too.
  5. Once I start there will be pressure to take on more - UNTRUE. Express your time constraints at the outset and take on as much or as little as you want to.
  6. I will waste my time in lots of meetings - UNTRUE. Committee meetings take ~2 hours one Monday per month. But many volunteers only need to attend occasionally or not at all!
  7. Young people can’t volunteer - UNTRUE.  Young people bring passion, a new perspective and modern-day skills that might otherwise be missing.

At the AGM, ALL POSITIONS are up for re-election. See below for more details of roles/responsibilities

Call to action! Please:

  • Attend the AGM on 14th June to learn about the club and support our volunteers - even if you don’t intend to volunteer yourself
  • Read about the roles below and see which one(s) you might be interested in
  • Reply to this email if you’re like to talk about where you might be willing to help.

Thank you for reading this far and giving volunteering your consideration!
