Manchester race marshalling

Posted by Jim Garside on 21 August 2021

Hi Manchester Marathon Volunteers,

Thank you for offering to help by volunteering at the Manchester Marathon and Manchester Half Marathon on Sunday 10th October.  We really appreciate the role volunteers play in making the event a success and we couldn’t do it without you.

See the route maps for the Marathon and Half Marathon here.

Volunteer Briefing:

There will be a volunteer briefing on the evening of Thursday 23rd September TBC. Timings will be confirmed nearer the time but it will be after 18:00. Only the group leader needs to attend this meeting.

This year, the briefing is likely to be a virtual event with a live Q&A session, but details will be sent nearer the time. At the meeting we will give a presentation on the event, which we’ll also send on to you so this can be presented to your group members.

Group numbers:

You may have provided an estimate of how many people you expect to be able to recruit to help at the event. Please let me know whether anything changes in the number of volunteers you are able to provide. We allocate roles based on this and this means we have an accurate idea of how many volunteers we still need to recruit in order to fill all positions.

With two events on one day, we need as many volunteers as possible to help ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone at the event. So please spread the word within your group and beyond. Information about volunteering can be found here.

Volunteer Registration:

For health and safety, we need all volunteers to register individually and provide emergency contact details. Volunteers will need to select the group they are volunteering with in order for me to know they are with you.

The link below is ready for you to forward to your group in order for them to register for the event. Please endeavour to have all your volunteers registered by Wednesday 1st September, in order for me to allocate roles prior to the volunteer briefing.

If you have any issues with using online registration, please let me know and I can send you an excel form to collate this information and return by email.

Zone Leaders:

Some group leaders will be asked to be zone leaders for the event. This involves having a radio on event day in order to report into event control when all marshals are in position and if there are any issues on the course. Please let me know if you are happy to be a zone leader.

Group Bank Details:

So that we can pay a donation to your group/club, please send me the up-to-date bank account details for the group by Wednesday 1st September at the latest.

As our head office is in Paris, payments are classed as international. Because of this we will need the IBAN and BIC/SWIFT for the account in order to make the payment.

ACT Awarenesss Course:

We would like to ask all group leaders to complete a free online ACT awareness course prior to the event. We would also encourage your group members to do the course if possible.

Devised by Counter Terrorism officers and security experts, the ACT Awareness eLearning package was previously only available to staff working in crowded places like shopping centres and entertainment venues. Now Counter Terrorism Policing has decided to open up the training to anyone who wants to become a Counter Terrorism Citizen so they can learn how to spot the signs of suspicious behaviour and understand what to do in the event of a major incident. ACT Awareness eLearning will provide nationally recognised corporate Counter Terrorism guidance to help people better understand, and mitigate against, current terrorist methodology.*

The eLearning Modules are the following:

1.       Introduction to Terrorism

2.       Identifying Security Vulnerabilities

3.       How to Identify and Respond to Suspicious Behaviour

4.       How to Identify and Deal with a Suspicious Item

5.       What to do in the Event of a Bomb Threat

6.       How to Respond to a Firearms or Weapons attack

7.       Summary and Supporting Materials

The course will take you 45 mins – 1 hour to complete. You don’t have to do it all in one sitting - you can save your progress and go back to it, so just make a note of a ref number and you can pick up where you left off.

When you do the training, please can you ensure that you log your attendance on the course under our pin code (see below), as for some events in the future we may need to show to stakeholders that some people in the team have done the course.
